Aiming for 100% Renewable Energy Use by 2050 to Realize Carbon Neutrality
In March 2022, Okamura Corporation (Head Office: Yokohama-shi, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director, President and CEO: Masayuki Nakamura) has joined the international initiative RE100, which aims to make the electricity used in business activities 100% renewable energy, and the Japan Climate Leaders Partnership (JCLP), which aims to realize a sustainable decarbonized society.
Through joining these initiatives, we will aim to make the electricity used in business activities 100% renewable energy by 2050 and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.
RE100 stands for "Renewable Electricity 100%," a global corporate initiative where the world's influential businesses commit to make the electricity used in their business 100% renewable energy. By bringing them together, it is intended to send a message to policy makers and investors to accelerate the energy transition. RE100 is led by The Climate Group, an international environmental NGO, in partnership with CDP, an NGO promoting global disclosure of climate change information. It is also implemented as part of the We Mean Business Coalition (WMB) commitments.
Sam Kimmins, Head of RE100 at Climate Group said: “We are delighted that Okamura Corporation has joined RE100 the global initiative led by the Climate Group in partnership with CDP. By committing to 100% renewable electricity by 2050, Okamura is taking leadership in climate action. It joins over 60 Japanese RE100 companies who collectively, send a powerful message that renewable electricity makes good business sense.
The Japan Climate Leaders Partnership (JCLP) is a coalition of Japanese companies established in 2009 under the recognition that the business sector must have a sound sense of crisis and take positive action to realize a zero-carbon society. A total of 206 companies from a wide range of industries, including representative companies in Japan, are JCLP members (as of February 2022). The total sales of member companies are approximately 121.2 trillion yen, with a total electricity consumption of about 61.4 Twh (reference values/estimates including overseas).
To achieve a carbon-free society, the JCLP has entered into a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Yokohama City and serves as a local partner of the international non-profit organization The Climate Group to disseminate RE100, EV100, and EP100 initiatives, promoting liaisons between local authorities and overseas organizations.
The Okamura Group has established its environmental policy and strived to reduce the environmental burden by effectively utilizing management resources in all of its business activities, while updating its long-term environmental vision for the future every 10 years based on the idea of "GREEN WAVE" that aims to create and ride green (environmental awareness) waves on its own. Aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, we have set a goal of reducing CO2 emissions in 2030 by 50% compared to the 2020 level as a milestone.
The Okamura Group identifies priority sustainability issues from the four perspectives of "Creating environments where people can thrive," "Pursuing employee satisfaction," "Global environmental initiatives," and "Responsible corporate activities" to promote sustainability activities. "Responses to climate change" is regarded as one of the priority issues in "implementing global environmental initiatives." By joining these initiatives, we will accelerate our efforts to switch to renewable energies and install self-consumption solar power generation facilities at Okamura Group plants to contribute to the realization of a carbon-free society.
