We spent a day walking the show, checking out what is new and trending in 2022.

First held in 1969, NeoCon is the premier commercial interior design event in North America and the world. Hosted in Chicago, NeoCon is three days long and draws more than 550 exhibitors and 35,000 design professionals from around the globe to see and discuss the newest products, ideas, and trends.
NeoCon is held in the Merchandise Mart—the world’s largest building when it opened in 1930—and occupies one million square feet of exhibition space across 11 floors. The show’s size is amplified by satellite events and pop-up spaces throughout the city. It’s a big show.
This year, we wanted to do something special, to share the NeoCon experience with those people who couldn’t attend. So, several members of the Okamura team and community gathered in Chicago to spend a day walking the show and checking out what’s new and trending in 2022.
We hope you enjoy the video diary created by Anastasia Chatzka, a Chicago-based fashion designer, as well as the photos and trend spotting by Yusuke Yamada, our very own Tokyo-based Editor-in-Chief of WORK MILL. (Click here to learn more about WORK MILL and its exploration of innovative workstyles and workplaces.) Here’s what caught their eye as they spent a day at NeoCon 2022:
Flexibility
Flexibility is key to meeting the everchanging needs of hybrid work schedules. The number of people in the office and the type of work they do can change from day to day—their workspaces need to change with them. Mobile
furniture solutions are one way to accomplish this. At NeoCon, there were many tables, chairs, sofas, room dividers, work pods, and even workstations with cleverly integrated casters—Sprint boards and stands being two such examples. On their own, and used in combination, these mobile solutions allow people to arrange and rearrange their space to fit their needs at any given time.
Screen and Dividers
A desire to block the distractions of the workplace—be they auditory or visual—is nothing new, but the solutions are evolving. The low screens, partitions, and dividers of the past are being replaced with larger, taller, more encompassing versions. Felt-clad privacy screens, now wrap around the sides of workstations and extend above monitors. Full-height walls, like Drape by Okamura, stand between spaces. While this doesn’t mark the return of the cubicle, it does begin to address some of the common issues of the open-office concept. The result is a good compromise of the two—encouraging interactions while minimizing the distractions that get in the way of focus.
Work Pods
Pods, booths, alcoves, and even tents—they come in all sorts of forms, but their purpose is the same—to provide people an easy getaway from the hubbub of the busy office. Work pod solutions, like Drape, create an enclosed, or semi-enclosed, environment that is quiet, private, and free from distractions. Some are simple with little more than
three walls. They’re intended for short-term use, like a phone call. Other work pods are quite elaborate and are fully equipped for a full-day’s work—an ergonomic task chair, external monitor, extra lighting, and, most importantly, a door—a sort of private office when you need one
Sustainable Materials
See it, touch it, use it—sustainable materials are no longer hidden behind upholstery, relegated to B-surfaces, or forced to mimic something more conventional. At Neocon, their unique colors, textures, and properties were proudly on display. Speckled felt- and fleece-like materials made of recycled plastics wrapped work pods, like the walls of Drape, lending them a soft touch and sound dampening qualities. Striated bamboo tabletops, like those featuring in the Phlox Collection, and exposed-plywood table edges, becoming interesting design details that caught the eye. And OSM—a common, compressed-wood substrate with an instantly recognizable, rustic texture—adorned walls, tables, and other surfaces.
Other products celebrated a subtler sustainability. The Cynara task chair, for example, utilized a light-weight construction to achieve both a refined look and a reduction in CO2 emissions.
Working Lounges
After working from home for several years, people are looking to bring a bit of that casual look and feel back into the office with them. Comfy sofas, slouchy chairs, and colorful stools—like the LW Pouf—are now the ingredients of the working lounge. The working lounge is the perfect place to relax while catching up on emails and text messages, or for a quick, unplanned conversation over coffee. Add a monitor and the lounge supports co-creation. Wheel in a white board and you have an ideation space. These lounges are infinitely flexible.
Relaxing Color Palettes
Desaturated, soothing tones of red, yellow, blue, and green were the color palette of 2022. At Okamura, these colors appeared on Phlox lounge chairs and Nagare sofas, beckoning guests to sit, relax, and chat. Elsewhere, they were featured on privacy screens, seat backs, table legs, rugs, and accessories. The results were peaceful, home-like environments. But don’t underestimate the visual impact of a bright, bold pop of color. The fuchsia upholstery of the Okamura LW Chair grabbed attention and sparked conversation..
Greenery
Fronds, flowers, and leafy greens were everywhere at Neocon. But rather than an afterthought—like that poor, thirsty office ficus tucked in the corner—this year, the greenery took center stage. Planters became furniture, piled high with big, broad leaves that softly delineated space. Pots were incorporated into desks and arranged on stands to bring a touch of nature, and home, to the office. And, occasionally, the greenery was no longer green. Several showrooms featured dried plants and flowers for an elegant, low-maintenance, effect. No matter their application, plants and planters were the accessory of NeoCon 2022.
A Day at the Show
Flexibility to sustainability, work pods to work lounges, screens to planters—there was a lot to see, experience, and inspire on the 11 floors and one million square feet of NeoCon 2022. Thank you for letting us share our experience. We hope you enjoyed a day at the show as much as we did!

Is hybrid work here to stay? Will some employees continue to choose the virtual workplace over the physical one? In addition to trendspotting, the Okamura team was also busy searching for answers to these questions. We spoke with NeoCon guests and the results were insightful.
