Kaetsu University

Kaetsu University KALC

Kaetsu University in Kodaira, Tokyo redesigned a portion of its lecture-style classrooms. As a place for a new style of learning called active learning, the space was named Kaetsu Active Learning Classroom, or KALC. Classes are conducted mainly through group work and discussion instead of the traditional unidirectional format. KALC involves more than students learning from instructors; students teach each other and hold creative communications with instructors and teaching assistants for a half-learning, half-teaching type environment. Furniture can be freely arranged and combined. The classes allow students to sit freely, move freely and view things freely. There is also cutting-edge information and communications technology environment, including multiple projectors and a multi-screen display setup.
